The famous Kolkata derby clash between Mohun B and East Bengal occurs on Friday in Indian Football League 2020-21. East Bengal will start their campaign, and Antonio Habas’s men are coming off a 1-0 win over Kerala in the season opener. 


Team Preview 


East Bengal makes their Indian Football League debut with the biggest clash called Kolkata Derby on Friday. Mohun B. and East Bengal have the biggest rivalry in Indian Football, playing 369 matches together. 

They have faced most in I-League, and for the first time, these two clubs will square off in Indian Football League. Both sides met previously in I-League, and Mohun B. took the game with a 2-1 win at home. They are the most successful side in the history of Kolkata Derby, and yet again, they are entering as the favourites in this first-leg fixture. 

Mohun B made a fluent start to their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Kerala in the season opener, courtesy of Roy Krishna’s goal in the 67th minute. Antonio Habashas won the title of this league twice with Kolkata, and the start to 2020-21 made them firm favorites. 

After the merging of Kolkata and Mohun B, Habas won his first match. In 2019-20, Kolkata finished second in the table and won the title by defeating Chennai 3-1 in the final. In I-League, the former Mohun B was the winner of season 2019-20 with scoring 39 points and remained unbeaten in 14 matches. 

On the other hand, East Bengal are playing their first game after involving in pre-season. They finished second in the last season of I-League, 13 points behind Mohun B. Under Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler, East Bengal would aim for a positive start to the debut campaign. They are a compact side with a good pool of Indian talents. They also signed a fine set of foreigners such as Anthony Pilkington and Daniel Fox. 

Fowler has a big task to end their trophy drought as they last won a title in Indian Football 16 years ago in I-League. Jeje Lalpekhlua and Eugeneson Lyngdoh are getting recall after injuries. East Bengal would hope to some fire from their new signing Pilkington who has an experience of 15 years for Ireland and various English clubs. He also scored a brace in the pre-season against Kerala.

  Two South Indian clubs, Chennai and Bengaluru, square off in the Friday encounter of Indian Football League 2020-21 . The irony is that both sides are entering into this encounter with a goalless draw in the previous outing.
